THOMSON INCREASES LEAD IN TOUR D’EGYPTE

By Bardy the Action Scribe

Jay Thomson of the MTN Energade team strengthened his grip on the race lead in the Tour d’Egypte cycle race on Wednesday when he won the 140km second stage in emphatic fashion.

The 21-year-old South African, who won Tuesday’s Stage 1 and claimed the race leader’s Yellow Jersey in the process, was in a three-rider breakaway group on Wednesday with the two riders posing the biggest threat to his lead, Aymen Ben Hassine of Tunisia and Kazak rider Pavel Nevdakh (Briasaspor), winner of the opening stage prologue time trial.

Sensing his rivals were flagging in the final kilometres, Thomson attacked them and rode on to the finish alone, clocking a time of 03hurs49min28sec. The victory margin saw him increase his lead in the race to more than two-and-a-half minutes with four stages remaining.

The Tour d’Egypte is one of 20 major international events on the International Cycling Union’s Africa Tour circuit. On Thursday, the riders face the 170km Stage 3.
